New MedViz Program Manager

Dr. Ragnar Nortvedt started in his new position as Program Manager for MedViz on October 15. He has his background from both research, lecturing and industry and holds a position as adjunct Professor at Dept. of Biology, UiB, from where he previously was occupied in a fulltime Professor position. Ragnar’s R&D work over 21 years at Institute of Marine Research, NIFES, Nofima and UiB has included fish nutrition, product development of seafood, chemometrics and multivariate modeling. He has also performed research in Canada and Vietnam. For the last four years Ragnar has worked in the salmon farming industry with primary focus on quality, quality systems, certification and HES. He has long experience with research funding and publishing.
Prof. Odd Helge Gilja will continue as Scientific Director in MedViz.. |

Ultrasound strain imaging for tissue characterisation
PhD thesis by Roald Flesland Havre

Pathology may change elastic properties of soft tissue, thus enabling strain imaging a diagnostic method. Real-time-Elastography (RTE) is a new imaging modality in which tissue strain during applied stress can be monitored. The aim of this thesis was to validate if RTE was a reliable modality to reflect differences in elasticity or tissue hardness and to interrogate if assessment of elastic changes by RTE could be used as a diagnostic tool in clinical practice. Particularly, we focused on the ability of RTE to differentiate between benign and malignant disease in intestinal and pancreatic lesions.
Two validation studies were performed using a tissue-mimicking phantom containing inclusions with different size, depth and defined elastic properties. We evaluated the influence of different parameter settings on image quality, quantification methods and intra- and interobserver variation. A study on surgical specimens of Crohn lesions and adenocarcinomas from the bowel showed increased tissue stiffness in both entities, but no significant difference between them. In evaluation of pancreatic lesions RTE showed malignant lesions with lower strain than benign lesions, but with substantial measurement variation. Some benign lesions also present with low strain. A ROC-AUC yielded 0.81-0.87 depending on the evaluation method.
