MedViz – a Research & Development cluster in Bergen. MedViz is a cluster of groups performing interdisciplinary research in advanced image analysis and visualisation bridging the gap between “bench and bedside”. MedViz also includes imaging physics and fundamental biomedical translational research. Our mission is to promote the development of biomedical and clinical imaging technologies with the ultimate goal of improving diagnosis and treatment of patients. MedViz wants to develop new clinical methods for potential commercialisation by means of denovo software for analysis, decision support and visual communication.

Seminar title: Neuroimaging in cognitive aging - a report on findings, challenges and perspectives
Judit Haász
Subtitle: Medical and biological issues - present findings
Arvid Lundervold
Subtitle: Methodological challenges and perspectives
The population in  developed countries is aging and this represents huge medical and socioeconomic challenges. With
increasing age the brain undergoes neurobiological changes that contribute to cognitive decline, and occasionally also
the development of neurodegenerative disorders such as dementia. A popular model posits that disconnection of brain
areas is an important factor in age-related cognitive decline. Magnetic resonance imaging methods such as diffusion
tensor imaging and resting-state fMRI allow the investigation of disconnection hypothesis at the macroscopic level. This
talk will describe findings on connectivity patterns  in normal aging and age-associated diseases.
We are about to bring our project on "Aging - cognition, imaging and genetics"
a step further , towards "longitudinal data analysis using mixed-effects models and graph theory".  Being involved in this
endeavour – comprising more than 100 healthy middle-aged and older people, participa ting in three study waves, three
years apart - the talk will discuss multidisciplinarity and methodological challenges.
Finally, some perspectives will be given on how this methodological machinery and experience  might interact with other
MedViz projects such as the "Brain-Gut" and the "Kidney" projects.

Matematisk poliklinikk 24.03.2015: Fra olje til medisin

In collaboration with MedViz, the research project "Computational medicine: Numerical models for medical images and signals" ( will organise a quarterly Mathematics Clinic ("Matematisk poliklinikk"), an open forum for transdisciplinary and spirited discussions, set in an informal atmosphere at Litteraturhuset i Bergen.
"Matematisk poliklinikk" will present mathematical-medical developments and challenges to the public, with the additional ambition of facilitating the interaction (convergence)
of medical and biological thinking and the mindsets & problem solving abilities in the computational mathematics community.
The first meeting, "Fra olje til medisin", starring Jo Røislien and Jan Nordbotten, takes place on March 24 2015 at 7 p.m. More information can be found at
